High
Holiday Rosh Hashanah Service:
Rabbi Korngold's High Holiday services are best described
as warm, engaging, and inclusive. They can not
be described as long, boring, droning or preachy.
Comments from past participants include: "Wow,
I never even had to resort to counting the ceiling tiles!"
and, "This is the first service I have been to
in years where I didn't count pages."
Weather permitting, the morning service will be held
outdoors. For the evening service in the chapel, and
the morning if it is indoors, we use a PowerPoint prayerbook
that we made, which is filled with nature writings and
photos from our trips to bring the outdoors in. We also
use the Reform Movement's Gates of Repentance Machzor.

We will walk together as a community, stopping often
to slow our selves down and be inspired by the majesty
surrounding us. weather permitting, our service will
be held in the outdoor amphitheater. You may also drive
your car to the service is the hike is too difficult.

an activity that suits you!

Rabbi's Hike Program Description (Sunday):
Join
Rabbi Korngold, Jeff Finkelstein, Raj Seymour
and other ARI staff on a beautiful hike on the
Nine Mile Mountainl Trail. It's 1.7 miles from
the trailhead to the top where we hear the stirring
sounds of the Shofar. (3.4 miles round trip, gaining
approximately 700 vertical feet). Because we begin
at 9,000 feet, this is considered a challenging
hike for people from out of state, and there is
one fairly steep, sustained section. We'll meander
in and out of the gorgeous golden aspen and majestic
ponderosa pines, as we make our way along the
trail.
Along the way we will stop for various "Adventure
Rabbi" style learning stops. Please wear
good hiking boots/ shoes, and bring water, rain
gear and a snack. If you are concerned about your
physical fitness, this may not be the best option
for you. Please note that we will be driving from
the lodge to the trailhead. No size limit.
2.
Mountain Music: Families with Children 0-9 years
old - Jeff Kagan (Saturday and Sunday)
Jeff
will be leading programs on Saturday and Sunday.
They will be different so youa re wlecoem to go
on both or either.)
Yikes! Some objects we need for Rosh Hashanah
have gone missing. Come with Jeff on a a short hike to see if we can find the
shofar, apples and honey and some other missing
objects. Along the way we'll enjoy playful, interactive
music, hear a story and maybe even create a mural
about our adventures. What a fun way to learn
about Rosh Hashanah! (Parents and children
will enjoy this program together. We are not equipped
to take children without an adult. Bring a blanket
from home to sit on.)
Jeff
Kagan Jeff
Kagan first worked with us on our Passover in
Moab retreat 2008 and the kids simply loved him!
He is the lead instructor at Thorne Ecological
Institute in Boulder, where he teaches ecology
to elementary and middle school students. He also

John Muir trail, and his mandolin and guitar playing.
Jeff is known for his ability to engage children
in creative and experiential learning about nature.
No size limit.
Join
David Gorodetzky and Raj Seymour on a beautiful
hike on the Waterfall Trail. We'll meander in
and out of the gorgeous golden aspen and majestic
ponderosa pines, as we make our way along the
creek.
Along the way we will stop for various "Adventure
Rabbi" style learning stops, where we will
learn about the geology we encounter, as well
as ecology from a Jewish perspective.
This will be a moderate hike,
with very little elevation change, but we are
at altitude. Please wear good hiking boots/ shoes,
and bring water, rain gear and a snack.
No size limit.

Mind Adventures -- When Science Meets Religion:
Intelligent Perspectives on Our World: Dr. Noah
Finkelstein (Saturday)
Dr.
Noah Finkelstein is a Professor of Physics Education
Research in the Department of Physics at the University
of Colorado, Boulder and a frequent participant
on Adventure Rabbi trips. Noah currently serves
as the President of the Adventure Rabbi Leadership
Council. Noah is known for welcoming everyone's
viewpoint, so please come prepared to share your
unique ideas.
Program
Description:
Why would it be that so many great scientists
are Jews? Despite recent efforts to polarize our
society into "religious" or "scientific"
camps, these forms of understanding the world-
science and religion- may be viewed as strong
complements of one another. In fact, they offer
many overlapping views of the way the world is
and how it works. We examine what it means to
engage in scientific or religious inquiry, explore
the challenges of a world that truly excludes
science or religion, and ground the broader questions
with with specific examples such as: the creation
story, miracles, visions of nature, or topics
of your own selection.
Mind Adventures will include
an easy walk and an engaging discussion. Please
dress comfortably for walking/ strolling and bring
an
open mind and appetite for inquiry.
No size limit.
6.

Biking: Mark Schwartz, Richard Rabinoff and Alison
Rabinoff (Saturday)

appropriate for an early-fall ride in the mountains.
Bike helmets and a mountain bike (knobby tires)
are required. Bright colored clothing is recommended
since the area we'll be riding in could be shared
by wildlife and hunters.
Ride Description: What better way to elevate your
spirit in prepartion for the New Year than zipping
through golden aspen groves! This will be a fun
intermediate single-track ride in Fraser. Most
likely a loop including Creekside and Flume. And
if the group is up for it, we may add some climbing
or a second loop.
In
case of rain or snow, you are welcome to join
another program session.
Mark
Schwartz:
Mark has been an avid mountain biker since he
got his first off-road bike in 1990. Through all
the wispy trails, rocky terrain, and mishaps to
both himself and his bicycle, he thoroughly enjoys
having the companionship and exhilaration of biking
w/ friends (old & new). Mark has been in Boulder
for 6 years now, and has been involved w/ the
Adventure Rabbi program since his arrival. He
is grateful for the opportunity to once again
co-lead the mountain-biking trip at the retreat

until he was in his teens. Since then he's become
an avid rider putting in over 2,000 miles each
season. When not on a bike you can find Richard
hiking, skiing and traveling to National Parks
for work.
8.
Nature
Photography with Jeff Finkelstein: (Saturday)
Focusing
and framing. Through the lens of the camera, we'll
focus on framing our goals for the new year. What
you choose to keep in focus, and what you choose
to omit from the image has the ability to shape
your memories when you look back, and set the
landscape for the year ahead.
We'll
focus on how to get award-winning photographs
from any camera. The session will discuss photo
composition; aperture, shutter speed and ISO;
and tips on how to take images that you'll want
to hang in your home. A digital SLR is recommended,
but any camera is welcome. We'll wander around
the property, finding macro and landscape opportunities.
Jeff
Finkelstein is
the husband of Rabbi Jamie Korngold, and along
with Peggy Dyer, is responsible for the images
that you've seen on the Adventure Rabbi website
(see images on the right side of the page).
Finkelsteinis
the founder of Boulder-based, Customer
Paradigm. His images have been published in
hundreds of publications throughout the US, Canada
and Japan, and has received paid contracts for
his images by the National Geographic organization.
Finkelstein has been featured in The New York
Times as a Web Guru, and his company has received
numerous awards, including the prestigious 2008

Eco
Kashrut and Nourishment: A Daily Spiritual Practice:
Alan Greenberg Alan Greenberg: (Saturday 3 pm -4:15
pm)
Eco Kashrut broadens of the concept of kashrut
to include restrictions on consumption based on
ecological considerations. The food we consume
has a tremendous impact on the health of the planet,
as well as, our own lives. We will expand the
definition of Eco Kashrut to include health considerations
to explore how the concept of nourishing ourselves
may be used to awaken our spirit.
Is there more to it than just buying organic vegetables?
How many of us include purchasing, preparing and
eating foods as a part of our daily spiritual
practice? Can each meal be prepared with the care
of a Shabbat dinner? Can eating right bring us
a sense of spirit? Is there a difference between
dieting and spiritual nourishment? Can eating
differently change how we think, act and feel?
We
will explore these questions relative to our grab-and-go
society in order to create a healthy lifestyle.
Although many of us don’t keep kosher, we
will see how these concepts still apply. If the
weather is nice we will take our discussion outside.
Alan
Greenberg has been attending events with
the Adventure Rabbi since the introduction of
services at Copper Mountain and is a member of
the Leadership Council. Alan has had an interest
in nutrition since moving to Colorado ten years
ago and has recently increased his studies to
pursue a career as a nutrition educator. Alan
lives in Boulder with his wife Catherine, who
teaches the Connective Yoga class.
Come
spend a quiet, contemplative session discussing
of one of the most important themes of the New Year:
Hazar b'teshuva, or return. After a brief discussion
about how our ancestors understood the meaning of
these words, and a quick peek at some traditional
texts, we'll engage in a guided meditation incorporating
the themes of renewal and return. No prior knowledge
or meditation experience required.
Jordie
Gerson lives in New York City and is the Director
of Education for Young Judaea. She is a graduate
of Harvard Divinity School, and a former Boulderite.
Before starting Graduate School, Jordie spent
two years living in a log cabin in Eldora, teaching
rock-climbing to at-risk girls and leading Jewish
and secular backpacking and environmental education
trips.
Jordie
is a proud graduate of the first Adventure Rabbi
training course for HUC students in the Summer
of 2006 and is thrilled to be spending her second
Rosh Hashanah with us!
11.
Torah on the Trail, a Contemplative Walk with Rabbi
Jordie Gerson:
(Sunday)
Join Rabbi Jordie Gerson for Torah on the Trail,
a contemplative nature walk accompanied by ancient
and contemporary Jewish texts. We'll notice the
wonder and rhythms of the natural world around
us, and take the time to learn what Judaism has
to say about it. This walk is appropriate for
those for whom Rabbi Korngold's hike may be too
rigorous, or those looking for a slightly more
contemplative atmosphere. It's also ideal for
those folks coming from sea level, whose bodies
may not have had time to acclimate to the altitude.
Please
bring a water bottle, hiking shoes, a hat, and
sunscreen.
12.
Spiritual Running with Deb Dusansky:
(Sunday)
Join us on second day Rosh Hashanah for some teachings,
stories, singing , praying and most importantly
running, in order to really put our whole self
into this New Year. All running levels, all paces,
are welcome. This is not a race; it is running
meditation practice, however it will be more rigorous
than Rabbi Gerson's walk. Not recommended for
people coming from sea level unless you are used
to running at altitude.
Deb
Dusansky has
been in Jewish education for over 20 years and
has been running the mountains around Boulder
for almost that long. Deb has directed Jewish
Renewal and Conservative religious schools. She
currently directs Stepping Stones of Boulder.
Praying and running in the mountains is the highest
Torah.
13. Free
Time:
Or, consider doing none of the above
and take some time to just sit quietly and read
a book, go for a trail run, photograph the elk,
take a nap or catch up with friend.

What
people say about the retreat:
"Both of your sermons were very appropriate, timely,
and special. The hiking teaching was also great. I love
that what you talk about is so applicable to our everyday
lives and keeps the whole experience very down to earth,
reachable, and therefore enjoyable." Jeanette
"I wanted to write you to tell you that I had such
a great time at the retreat. It was everything you have
been telling me it would be, and more. Not only did
I meet some great people but I had some major Jewish
realizations as well. In fact, I'm still high off the
Jewish buzz." Emily
"The retreat was wonderful! It was so nice to have
the service outside. I especially liked the time you
gave us to reflect and write about what we wanted to
accomplish/change for the coming year. That was very
meaningful...as was the hike to the site, your reflections
along the way, and the time we stopped by the lake to
do tashlich. The meditation with Jordi was great as well
and very insightful." Johanna
"Thanks for creating such a fantastic alternative
to traditional services. We all (event the adults) really
loved Jeff Kagan's program. Our family connects with
doing it the Adventure Rabbi way!" Lynette
"My parents loved the retreat! I know that it meant
so much for htem to be there with us.. My mom was wondering
if she could get a copy of your sermon from the morning
services. She really liked it and wanted to reread it." Bobbee
"There was such a sense of togetherness even though
I really only know a handful of people---- everyone
seemed very light spirited, welcoming and interested
in each other. I noticed this with many of the new people
I met during orientation and over the retreat. For me
there is a nice balance of being able to be social,
while also being able to experience some time with your
own thoughts--- walking on the trail on the way up to
morning services, stopping at the lake to let go, walking
up to the "sanctuary"--- what a meaningful
journey! What a wonderful way to start the New Year."
Melissa
What
we learned from years past:
1.
You wanted the option of a full weekend of events.
This year, the program begins on Friday afternoon. Join
us either just through Saturday afternoon if you are
on limited time or financial budget or stay through
Sunday afternoon.
2.You
wanted good authentic Jewish food served in a quiet
dinning room. Despite our best efforts, we
can't find a caterer who can handle our size group at
affordable prices. The dinning room at the Ranch is
quiet and private - a nice plus.
3.
You wanted to pay by the room, not per person.
This YMCA will let us do that.
4.
You wanted to check out single track off the ranch.
This year the mountain bikers will be going
to Fraiser, where there are awesome single track rides
to explore.
Join
us and discover why Rabbi Abraham Ben Maimonides taught:
"In order to serve God, one needs access to the enjoyment
of the beauties of nature, such as the contemplation of
flower-decorated meadows, majestic mountains and flowing
rivers. For all these are essential to the spiritual development
of even the holiest of people."
