Atlantic Mountain Climb 13, 841'
(alternate non-peak hike available)
July 21-22, 2007

Atlantic Peak in early June (still snow-covered)

Climbing Atlantic Peak from the west ridge rewards you with stunning views.

As you climb the ridge, you quickly enter the heart of the wilderness.

On this peak, we leave the crowds of 14ers behind.

The wildflowers are spectacular, and the view vast, reaching all the way to the Maroon Bells.

This is a great hike for those new to peak climbs as well as more experienced hikers.

Description: The climb is 4 miles and climbs 2,481 ft and then descends 2,481 which some of us think is harder than going up! It is not technical but is a steady climb up the mountain.

Time: We estimate that the round-trip, up and back, will take us 8 hours, depending on the pace of the group.

Difficulty: Strenuous. No technical climbing is involved but the hike will be long and is at altitude. This trip is not as hard as a 14er, or as hard as the Aspen to Crested Butte hike we did in 2005, but we will still be climbing 2,481 feet! If you are not in excellent physical condition or if you currently live at sea level, please be prepared to do the alternate hike with Rabbi Korngold.

Alternate Plan for Those Not up to the Peak: On Sunday, Rabbi Korngold will be offering a non-peak climb, a hike at a lower elevation. (She is pregnant is not allowed to go to 13, 841') You may choose to sleep in late on Sunday and hike with her.
