two days of camping and day-hiking (with a Jewish twist), July 26-27 in Lake County, Colorado.
La Plata campsite Jewish Camping Trip
View from our Campsite

The North Fork of Clear Creek meanders through an exquisite alpine valley, surrounded by the soaring peaks of La Plata, Huron and Virginia. Lodge Pole Pines, aspen and wildflowers carpet the mountains, and human visitors are comparatively infrequent.

Our "backcountry" campsite is two miles beyond Winfield on Clear Creek Canyon Road, in one of the most pristine and magnificent valleys in Colorado.

We will enjoy Shabbat and Havdallah Adventure Rabbi style: hiking in the magnificent alpine wilderness, eating delicious trail treats, and taking plenty of time for songs and stories.

Rabbi Jamie Korngold climbs La Plata with Jewish Hiking Group from Boulder
Climbing La Plata, a Rolling Ascent to the Peak

On Sunday we rise early to climb La Plata peak. Our chosen approach is on the less traveled side of the mountain, allowing us to enjoy a more private, contemplative ascent. We'll bring in the new week with a great sense of achievement and some spectacular views.

La Plata is the fifth highest peak in the state, but a "do-able" climb even for first time 14ers who are in excellent physical condition and up for the challenge.

We will head back to Boulder late afternoon on Sunday.

Since our campsite is on a rugged road, we will use high-clarence vehicles to get there. Most cars can make it within 2 miles of the site, and we will shuttle and carpool to make sure we can all get in.
