2. Where is the Adventure Rabbi Program located?

The Adventure Rabbi Program is based in Boulder, Colorado. Participants come from all over the United States, Canada and Israel.

Yearly retreats are held in Moab, Utah, and Boulder, Colorado and various locations around the country when Rabbi Korngold is invited to lead or speak. Although we have office space, we do not have a synagogue building. We rent a public school for our religious school and other programs are held outdoors or in rented spaces.

3. How many Adventure Rabbis are there?

There is only one Adventure Rabbi – Rabbi Jamie Korngold. How many rabbis have completed 100 mile ultra-marathons, been a nationally-ranked skier and ridden a bicycle across the country? That said, because of the immense popularity of the Adventure Rabbi program, there are three rabbis on our staff.

Although many rabbis are interested in combining Judaism and the outdoors, Rabbi Korngold is the only rabbi in the world whose full-time job is doing this work.

Rabbi Korngold has led guide training programs for rabbinic students and mentored rabbis to teach them how to use her unique approach to make Judaism relevant, meaningful and accessible.

4. How many people does the Adventure Rabbi program reach?

The Adventure Rabbi program was founded in 2001, and has reached tens of thousands of people across the U.S.

Programs frequently have hundreds of participants – many of whom travelled thousands of miles to join a retreat or have a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony.

5. What is unique about the Adventure Rabbi Program?

Adventure Rabbi is a cutting edge model of synagogue life appropriate for 21st century Judaism. Gone are the days when Jews felt obligated to belong to a synagogue. Today, 70% of American Jews do not belong to a congregation.

In fact, many Jews today don’t feel obliged by Judaism at all. Judaism has become a choice and if the religion does not enhance and enrich our lives, if Judaism is not relevant, meaningful and accessible, many of us opt out completely.

The Adventure Rabbi Program puts meaning back into Judaism. We met people where they are (often literally hiking or skiing) and show them how Judaism can enhance their lives, without having to give up their weekends or making big pledges. Through our activities and community, adults and kids come to love Judaism.

6. What programs and events does the Adventure Rabbi offer?

Adventure Rabbi offers programs for every major Jewish holiday, including Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Passover.

Shabbat services are held on top of Flagstaff Mountain in the summer

Adventure Rabbi Kids – the Adventure Rabbi Religious School – offers classes for children ages 6-13.

The Adventure Rabbi program also offers weddings, conversions, bar and bat mitzvahs, brit milah and brit bat, and funerals

Adventure Rabbi specializes in experiential teaching of eco-Judaism as well as Jewish ritual, practice and theology. Teaching includes children’s programs, bar and bat mitzvah preparation, educational programs for families and youth, conversion preparation, and spiritual assistance for those coping with major life changes, including divorce and death.

7. When was the Adventure Rabbi community founded?

The Adventure Rabbi community was founded in 2001.

8. What are Rabbi Korngold’s credentials?

Rabbi Korngold received her ordination (1999)  and Masters in Hebrew Letters (1997) from Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion, the academic, spiritual and professional development center for Reform Judaism.  She earned a  B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University, Ithaca NY.

Rabbi Korngold is a member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (the international rabbinic association of Reform Judaism,) an Executive Board member of Chaver (The Boulder Colorado Rabbinical Council) and a member of Synagogue 3000 Emergent Leader’s group.

9. Who comes to Adventure Rabbi events?

Generally one third of the participants are singles, one third are couples without kids, and one third are families. Singles like coming because it’s not specifically a singles event — so it’s less of a meat-market.

Many of the people who have come to Adventure Rabbi events have met their closest friends, and several people have met and married through our programs.

90% of the participants are not involved in the Jewish community in any other way. 10% are extremely involved in the Jewish community, and are often board members of synagogues or professional Jewish educators or leaders. These people come to the Adventure Rabbi Program to supplement their Jewish experience.

Although people of all ages participate (newborn – 90+ years old), the bulk of the participants are between 25 and 55 years old.
