Adventure
Bar & Bat Mitzvah

An alternative Bar/ Bat Mitzvah Class
combining outdoor adventures with Jewish learning
based in Boulder Colorado

Looking for an alternative to the traditional bar and bar mitzvah program?

Interested in an non-traditional, outdoor, adventure based program that will infuse your child's bar or bat mitzvah experience with meaning?

Our ten month program is idea for students who:

  • Love outdoor activities
  • Thrive in experiential education settings
  • Enjoy small group learning sessions
  • Appreciate lots of time learning directly with a rabbi
  • Have no Jewish background, have years of Jewish background or anywhere in between!

Introducing the Adventure Bar and Bat Mitzvah Class!

How does it work?
For ten months preceding your bar or bat mitzvah, you will meet once a month with Rabbi Steve Booth-Nadav. Five of those meetings will be private sessions either in phone or in person, with just you and Rabbi Steve.

The other five meetings will be outdoor adventures, shared with the other members of the Bar and Bat Mitzvah Adventure Class. Rabbi Jamie Korngold will join the group for some of the group adventures. Our plan is to embark on one Friday evening program (parents and siblings are invited to jon for this one outing), three half-day adventures, and finally one full-day outing.

You will hike, climb mountains, snowshoe, even do some trail work to give back to the community, all while learning about each other, Judaism and yourself.

What about Hebrew?
You will study Hebrew one on one with a tutor. Most students require about a year of weekly lessons prior to their bar or bat mitzvah, but this varies greatly depending on your prior knowledge of Hebrew. We can suggest tutors with whom you can work or you may also chose to work with Rabbi Steve. (tutoring fees are not included in the program fee)

What will I learn?
Becoming a bar or bat mitzvah marks your entrance to your teenage years. It is our hope that your time on the trail with Rabbi Steve and Rabbi Jamie will give you some tools to deal with the possible turbulence ahead. Buckle your seat belts! Conversations will include topics such as:

  • Who is God anyway and what does He/She/It have to do with me?
  • How does prayer work and can it help me ace my test?
  • Shabbat vs. skiing. Is there a way I can do both?
  • What does mountain climbing have to do with Judaism?
  • What can Judaism teach me about being a friend?

Our alternative program also covers traditional topics such as:

  • Learning to read prayers in Hebrew
  • Reading from the Torah
  • Creating and completing a social action (tikkun olam) project
  • Writing a speech about the Torah portion.

The Ceremony
Finally, it is time for the actual Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony! Your unique ceremony will be held at the location of your choosing, before the friends and family you invite. Because we use a paper Torah rather than a kosher parchment Torah (which might be damaged by the elements) our ceremonies can take place in any location, as accessible or adventurous as your family chooses.

Small ceremonies often take place as part of a hiking trip, while larger ceremonies are generally held in locations where everyone can sit in chairs in order to minimize the impact of large groups on the wilderness.

A favorite outdoor locations is the Jaycee or Wood Shelter on Flagstaff Mountain above Boulder and a fabulous indoors venue is the Community House in Chautauqua Park in Boulder, Colorado.

Rabbi Steve can also help you create a destination bar or bat mitzvah ceremony in the mountains (i.e. Vail, Copper, Winter Park etc.) out of
state or even in Israel!
