Here is your chance to study Judaism as an adult.
We offer adult b’nai mitzvah training that focuses on Jewish literacy and identity and is tailored to adults. The training will enable you to participate confidently in a Shabbat service and to engage without hesitancy in the rituals and rhythms of Jewish life.
And if Hebrew acquisition has been a stumbling block for celebrating an adult Bar or Bat Mitzvah, this is for you!
Embark on an adventure of mind and spirit as we explore spirituality and Jewish wisdom.
Imagine the potential of consistent study. Here is a chance to make Judaism relevant and accessible for yourself, to carefully unpack the meaning behind prayers, to create a safe place to explore your questions about God, and to feel empowered to participate fully in Jewish rituals.

When:
You and your instructor will select a mutually convenient time.
Hebrew:
Our goal with Hebrew is to help you gain the skills to participate actively in the service. It is very difficult to learn a new language as an adult, and Hebrew is among the harder languages because it uses different letters. We will use a combination of Hebrew and English letters to help you celebrate a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
You will study Hebrew privately with our Educator Rebecca Shavit-Lonstein, either in online lessons or in person in Longmont, CO. We feel confident that we will be able to achieve the following*:
- Learn to read the Hebrew letters
- Learn to chant three verses of the Torah
- Learn the central prayers of the service from the transliteration
* Students are welcome to learn more or learn this all from Hebrew letters, but these are our minimum requirements for Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah
Shabbat:
Students will explore Shabbat and develop a meaningful and sustainable Shabbat practice. Past students’ practices include meditation, Jewish crafts, reading, hiking, cooking with family, and reconnecting with old friends.
Optional Ceremony:
Students pursuing a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah will celebrate the completion of the course with a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah ceremony. The ceremony will be at a location you select, with the friends and family you choose to attend, and officiated by Rabbi Alab Shavit-Lonstein.
Speeches:
If you opt to add a ceremony, you will write a speech that explores the meaning of your Torah portion, describes your experience with the Shabbat project, and reflects upon your overall experience of becoming an adult Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah.
Requirements:
No prior knowledge is required, only a willingness to learn.
