Curriculum

This year we are studying Jewish  Values as a mechanism to learn about Judaism and about ourselves. What does Judaism teach us about how we treat each other, the Earth, and ourselves? What do we learn about our responsibility to others? What do our core values teach us about the Jewish people historically and today?

We like to think about it as mensch training!

In 2020-2021, we will be studying Jewish Values and how we can bring them into our lives. Each class includes a discussion, an activity, and a craft.

Kindness in Hebrew is chesed. Chesed is a special virtue or middah. Chesed guides how a person acts towards others. It is showing concern about the well-being and feelings of others. In this lesson, we will learn about Rabbi Hillel, who lived from (110 BCE-1CE) and was known for his kindness and his respectful treatment of others.

Gratitude in Hebrew is Hakarat Hatov. Hakarat hatov is being thankful for the people, things, and kindnesses in the world. It literally means recognizing the good.

Apologizing and Forgiveness in in Hebrew are Teshuva and Selichot. In this lesson, we learn from the example of Joseph and his brothers who learned the power of apologizing, forgiving, and reconciliation.

Acceptance is based on the Jewish concept of B’tzelem Elohim or that we are all created in the image of God. Whether we believe in God or not, we learn from this concept that we are all equal. Our first step to learn to love our differences, understanding, and appreciating what others bring to our lives.

Patience in Hebrew is sav•la•noot. Sav-la-noot means to have the ability to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.

Integrity in Hebrew is yo-shehr. Someone who lives with yo-shehr is someone who is doing the right thing even when no one else is watching. We will learn about passages in Leviticus that guide us to have integrity.

Respect in Hebrew is Kavod. Kavod is noticing and valuing people and treating them the way we wish to be treated ourselves.

Empathy in Hebrew is empatya. Empatya is the ability to be aware of, perceive, understand, and be sensitive to the feelings, thoughts and experiences of another and to express that understanding through a supportive response. We learn the story from II Kings about the Suanamite Woman, a woman of radical empathy

Some of our meetings will involve the whole school and parents so that students can experience being part of a larger community.

Teaching Style

We have been teaching online since 2001 so although COVID-19 pushed us to be even more creative, we came into this situation with two decades of experience in online education.

Our online school will be very similar to our in-person school. We will start with an all-school song session, which parents and siblings are welcome to attend. The lively Jewish music will help us transition from whatever we’ve been doing all day and “arrive” at ARK.  Rabbi Jamie will set the stage for the day and then students will break into their classes for small group time.

Online education can still be experiential! Fear not. We’ve been known to do art projects, cook, and even go for hikes all while engaged with our online community

Our students learning experiences will provide them with tools to explore the richness of our Jewish heritage. We will learn about Jewish values, Jewish personalities, and Jewish culture. We will build meaningful and genuine relationships with our tradition and each other. All this and more will firmly ground their Jewish identity while helping them become people with whom we all want to share the planet.

Our Staff

Ari Sharfstein, Educator:

Ari Sharfstein is originally from Florida but moved to Boulder from Melbourne, Australia in August 2019. We are thrilled to have him join our team. He is an exuberant Jewish Educator and has been a song leader since the age of 14. Ask him about the guitar he received as a gift when he became bar Mitzvah and also the time he worked in Cape Town.

Ari will be teaching our 3-4th graders and leading our song-sessions.

Ari loves connecting with people through song, and creating community through music. Ari especially enjoys teaching 3-4th graders because they know how to dig in and sing out.

In addition to teaching at ARK, Ari is one of our B’nai Mitzvah tutors and leads Bar and Bat Mitzvah ceremonies.

Ari is a graduate student in CU’s Department of Music Education. His goal is to be a High School choir teacher.

Jocelyn Leibow-Zajac:

Jocelyn has been living in Boulder since the Fall of 2000.  Prior to her arrival, she had been teaching art and coaching skiing in Oregon and then at Beaver Creek, CO, to children of all ages and abilities. Jocelyn is an outdoor enthusiast and loves to be creative. She loves to hike, camp, mountain bike, ski, and is full of adventure.

Growing up in Los Angeles with a dad who was President of the Jewish Federation and the JCCA, Judaism was woven throughout her life from being a Bat Mitzvah and confirmed, to Jewish activities and camps through the JCC.  She attended UAHC Camp Swig, in Northern California, and was a counselor as well as a camper. Becoming a camp counselor was the beginning of following her passion for teaching.

Jocelyn holds a MA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Literacy, and a BA from the University of Oregon in Rhetoric and Communication. She has also completed her Orton-Gillingham (OG) Practitioner Certification, an approach for the treatment of dyslexia.  She is currently a teacher in the Boulder Valley School district. In the winter she coaches alpine ski racing and is a trainer for coaches through EMSC, a local ski club in Boulder.

Jocelyn is very excited to be joining the Adventure Judaism community!

Religious School Colorado

Rabbi Jamie Korngold, Adventure Rabbi:

Rabbi Jamie is the founder of the Adventure Judaism and is thrilled to get to hang out with Adventure Rabbi Kids once a month. Her priority is to create a fun, safe environment, in which kids can make deep and lasting friends, even if they came in knowing no one.

Rabbi Jamie will be teaching the 5-6th grade class. She enjoys getting to know the students before they join the Adventure B’nai Mitzvah Class in 7th grade.
